Benoble Fire

by Roger Sutton

A request was made on Monday evening for some assistance with a controlled burn on a property at Benoble which had jumped a control line and extended into the hills below the Goat Track, an area of TMRFB responsibility. As it threatened the western slopes of the mountain John Heydon put out a page for a mop-up team and at 6am John, Rory and Roger took TM52 down to enter the area at the track leading up under the HT power lines from Mundoolan Connection Rd. The fire boundary was burning slowly through a heavy leaf litter under lantana vine and access was a difficult. We ended up with 6 lengths of layflat down a steep hill, several refills of TM52 with extra top-ups and welcome refreshments provided by Tim, driving Canungra 41. Despite a further breakout, the fire was eventually contained with lots of water and foam, the crew returning at 6pm.

Hopefully, a contained control burn will be possible below the western escarpment sometime this season.
